the_deepest_blackEmber has a little problem...fairies want her dead. Ember spends her Friday nights lurking in the bad parts of town, killing fairies. It’s either that, or become a victim to their flesh-eating hunger. Then she meets Remy, a fae who, despite getting on her nerves, isn’t evil. He tells her that a shadow has been consuming his world, changing its inhabitants and letting destructive beasts into his city. He is searching for his brother who went missing during the catastrophe. When a team of mercenaries come for Ember, she has little choice but to join Remy in his quest. Together, they decide to bait a trap. What they find reveals the destruction of the fae world means the end of the human world, too–and it’s Ember’s fault.

Book Review - Miss Ridley & the Warlock by Diana Green

Diana Green's story of Miss Ridley and the Warlock delighted me in the way she entwined old world charm with a new alternate world.

I am always overjoyed with rebels who mix genres. Green has done that with an historical fantasy with a hint of romance, for good measure.

This story held an exciting pace which kept me keen to discover the answers of the many riddles we are introduced to in the first few chapters. What is the nature of the pact between Allan and Ureleon? Will Romance blossom between Gemma and Allan? What are the strange creatures that circle the grounds at night?

Gemma Ridley is a likeable character with a down-to-earth nature and a sharp mind. You feel empathy for her. Disgraced by her father's legacy and overshadowed by the memory of the mother of her young charges, she holds her head high.

Allan Kenrik is a dashing, but not pompous, hero who has to face seemingly impossible decisions for the future of those he cares for.  He might just be my new "book boyfriend".

Delve into this magical world, if you enjoy paranormal fantasy with a twist, and a splash of romance. It's a quick read, but an enjoyable one. I loved the strong female character, and the exciting pace - and I think you will, too.

I'm looking forward to Green's next book, Mr Thorne & the Witch.

I received this book to review through Beck Valley Books Book Tours, all the opinions above are 100% my own.

Miss Ridley & the Warlock by Diana Green

Gemma Ridley’s first encounter with Squire Kenrik proves nothing short of alarming. So much so, she considers fleeing back to the city, despite the fact only poverty and scandal await her there. Could those challenges be worse than staying as governess on a haunted estate and working for a dangerously handsome eccentric?

Little does Gemma realize what dark secrets and wondrous enchantments will transform her life at Rook Hall. Squire Kenrik is more than he seems—more than any man she has known. He may be the source of her undoing, or he may hold the key to her deepest desires. Only time and the guidance of her heart will tell.

***Stories from the Secret Realms are historically-inspired fantasy romance. They share a setting reminiscent of England in the mid-19th century, but their world is rich with magic.

Each book stands alone, and they can be read in any order.

GLAM - searching for alternate histories.

GLAM is an acronym for Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums. It also incorporates other cultural institutions such as theatres, zoos, botanical gardens, public broadcasters etc. (Wikimedia Outreach)

While tutoring in  Information Science, I realised that I come across many interesting resources that some people may not know about. I will be sharing some of these on a regular basis, to spread the GLAM knowledge.

This week I will share the interesting ideas that are coming from specialised searching for history of minority groups. There have been amazing inroads made into using archives to support the histories of Indigenous people, disability activism,
LBGQTI activism, and mental health histories.
