Mr Thorne & the Witch - Review & Giveaway

My Review:

I have been drawn to magical books all of my life, and I especially enjoy books about witches. I think the appeal lies in changes in the balance of power between men and women. A magical woman is able to hold her own against the patriarchy, which is precisely why witches, or rather wise women, were feared in the past.
Well, Diana has certainly drawn me into this story, and she paints a good villain. They made my skin crawl and were all of the things I despise about abuse of power, greed, and corruption. We will not be sorry to see them get their comeuppance, will we?
Meanwhile, Mr Thorne is delightful. A studious man who is fascinated by his chemistry and the art of pyrotechnics. Fireworks are a relatively recent invention in this region, and he is one of the best at what he does. His kindness and gentle manner were very endearing.
Karene is a strong, female lead and doesn't need rescuing; so their relationship is a real partnership, where the exchange is a very warm one, instead of the clichéd "princess and the knight". She is just as protective towards Malcolm as he is towards her.
This was a quick read, but a satisfying one. It's summer holidays in Australia now, so this is perfect for your holiday spot reading list.
This is the second book I have read by Diana Green, and you can read my review of Miss Ridley and the Warlock at this link. I have to confess this was my favourite of the two.

Now follow through for an excerpt of Mr Thorne and the Witch, the tour links and a giveaway.
I received this book through Beck Valley Books Book Tours, I have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own.

Fleeing the men who brutally murdered her family, Karene Munroe must hide her magical abilities and hope to go unnoticed in the bustle of the capital city. She takes refuge in the house of Malcolm Thorne, a fireworks maker, who offers her a job as his assistant.

Despite her precarious situation, she cannot help but be drawn to this generous and charming man. A future with him could be wonderful, but her past won’t be laid to rest. From a local crime lord who seeks to use her powers, to the hunters who are hard on her heels, Karene is trapped in a maze of danger and lies. Can she find a way out before Malcolm is lost to her forever?

Miss Ridley & The Warlock
Gemma Ridley’s first encounter with Squire Kenrik proves nothing short of alarming. So much so, she considers fleeing back to the city, despite the fact only poverty and scandal await her there. Could those challenges be worse than staying as governess on a haunted estate and working for a dangerously handsome eccentric?

Little does Gemma realize what dark secrets and wondrous enchantments will transform her life at Rook Hall. Squire Kenrik is more than he seems—more than any man she has known. He may be the source of her undoing, or he may hold the key to her deepest desires. Only time and the guidance of her heart will tell.
