My Review:

A few years ago my son introduced me to the interesting world of Steampunk. He had been drawing a fantastic Dirigible which he said was inspired by many of the Steampunk sites he had found on the Internet. When he started to describe what Steampunk was all about I realised I was actually quite enamoured of this genre (at least in the movies and on the net). However, this is the first Steampunk novel I have read, other than novels such as H.G.Wells who have obviously inspired the movement.
Chasing the Star Garden by Melanie Karsak is the first in her series called The Airship Racing Chronicles. If this first book is an example of what to expect in the series, I do believe I shall be reading them all. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to adults interested in this type of historical speculative fiction.
Our main character is Lily Stargazer an airship racer with a hidden past and a sad childhood. Lily is tough and capable, as well as all woman. But she has these little self destructive habits such as opium addiction, absinthe and never getting too close to her lovers.
She is surrounded by amazing guys, including her crew Jessup & Angus , her sometimes lover - the fabulous Lord Byron, and Sal who is a mechanical genius and doesn't mind warming Lily's bed either.  But, for Lily and her friends, things are about to get very interesting.
When a harlequin secretly passes Lily a kaleidoscope, telling her to get to Venice, and then throws himself off her airship tower, Lily is immersed into an adventure of a lifetime. Who will get to the secret treasure first? Why is Lily so important to the cause? Will there be true love for Lily? These questions and more will keep you reading through this exciting narrative. I loved Lily and wanted to cheer for her, while at the same time, I was so saddened by her self destructive behaviour and I wanted to hit her over the head with that opium pipe and say "Don't throw your life away."
I loved Karsak's descriptions of the airships which made me feel I was flying around the world with the crew. I really enjoyed hearing about the clothing and the mechanical devices, so cleverly woven through the story. The thrilling plot kept me reading until way past my bedtime, just so I could find out what would happen next and so I could uncover the secrets to Lily's past.
I thoroughly enjoyed my introduction to this genre. Thank you Ms Karsak. I shall tip my top hat.
